Research Tools

I heard a librarian say recently that it used to be her role to help people find the information they wanted; now her role is helping people find trustworthy information.  While some Pagan-related information is still hard to come by, today there are many books and websites to choose from.  Here are some key elements to keep in mind as you search for information.

Check multiple sources
I encourage you to check many sources and question all that you read.  Who are the authors of the information and what are their backgrounds?  What are their apparent motivations?  Does the information ring true with what you already know?

Think critically
I would also encourage you to take your time with your studies.  Give yourself time to think about and process what you are learning.  If something just resonates with you, or if something makes you uncomfortable, take time to figure out why.  This type of self exploration is always good, no matter which spiritual path you are on.  And finally, the last piece of advice, keep notes on your studies -- not only the information you find, but also your own thoughts and opinions.

Search Engines

Based on SearchEngineWatch.com, the top search engines are still Google and Yahoo.  Here are some links you may want to follow in your quest for information.

Yahoo! Wicca and Witchcraft Google, Wicca
Yahoo! Pagan Traditions and Paths Google, Wicca Traditions
Yahoo! Paganism Google, Pagan
Yahoo! General Directory Google, General Directory
Lycos AltaVista
AllTheWeb HotBot
Ask.com (was Ask Jeeves) AOL Search,  http://aolsearch.aol.com (internal)
http://search.aol.com/(external)

I am continually amazed at the number of Pagan sites on the internet.  Even if you checked out your topic last week -- check again!  You may be surprised at what the search engine now includes.  When using a search engine it is helpful to enter several different terms (whether in one search or in several searches).  For example, suppose you wanted to search for Pagan parenting information. You could search for Parent* Pagan Neopagan Neo-pagan Wicca Witchcraft -- as one search process, or as separate search processes:

  • Parent* Pagan
  • Parent* Neopagan
  • Parent* Neo-pagan
  • Parent* Wicca
  • Parent* Witchcraft

The asterisk (*) tells the search engine that I'm looking for any word that starts with Parent (so I'll find sites with the key words parent, parents, and parenting).

Reference and Directory Sites

Yahoo! Encyclopedias Google Encyclopedias
About.com Wikipedia
Encyclopedia Smithsonian WWW Virtual Library

On-Line News Agencies

Don't forget that most news agencies have a Search mechanism you can use to look for recent articles. There are far too many to name here, so my suggestion is that you go to either:

Google Directory for News

Yahoo! Directory for News & Media

Book Resources

Local Libraries
Check phone book or use a search engine -- and don't forget to check with your local college or university library.

Local Metaphysical Shops
To find something in your own area your best bet may be to do a specific search or check the Witches Voice list of local shops.

On-Line Pagan Shops
Again, for the best list -- Witches Voice list of on-line shops.  You can find additional options by looking through the Google Directory for New Age Shopping or the Yahoo! Shopping search engine.

Bookstores
You can find many booksellers by using the Search Engines.  Some of the more popular places to buy books on-line are Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Buy.com, and abebooks (used and rare books). You can also find books at auction sites like ebay.

Note: Before you set off to purchase one of these books on-line please consider purchasing it through your local metaphysical shop. These stores are more than just a place to buy things -- they provide a safe gathering place for Pagans.  Often these stores offer educational courses and services, like Reiki sessions and Tarot readings. Supporting your local store with your book purchases is a great way to let them know how much you appreciate their services and their presence in your community.
