Academic Pagan Studies

Paganism's growth in size and acceptability has led to at least two new trends in academic studies: (1) the increasing number of academics studying aspects of Paganism and (2) the need for Pagan seminary-type training in leadership and clergy development.  This page explores the study of Paganism in academia, while the Pagan Clergy page focuses specifically on clergy training and needs.

Academic Organizations & Publishers

Consultation on Contemporary Pagan Studies (CCPS)
CCPS is a program unit within the American Academy of Religion.  At their website you'll find information on the annual meeting along with a list of journals and other organization of interest.  For academics studying contemporary Paganism this is a most important association.

PaganStudies.org
This site is designed specifically to "provide information and communication about the study of Contemporary Paganism in academia."  Here you will also find links to other organizations and academic programs.  There are also an extensive bibliography and list of conference papers.

Pagan Studies Series by AltaMira Press
There are numerous scholarly works on Paganism worth recommending, but I wanted to give special attention to this ambitious program, the Pagan Studies Series, which has already produced several valuable works.

Additional Book and Journal Recommendations

The Drynemetum's Academic Research Center for Researching Neopaganism, Druidism and Wicca has great links to Neo-Pagan journals, encyclopedias, and other academic resources.  These authors provide one of the best collections I've seen -- it is well worth the time to explore their extensive website!  A search for "Pagan" & "Journal" will reveal many magazine-type publications, such as The Pomegranate (check here for back issues).
